Where do you find a mermaid?

Probably the most famous mermaid is the Little Mermaid statue in Copenhagen, Denmark. It’s a bit off the beaten track although the last time I went there there was a crowd of Russian tourists clambering all over it.

It’s quite small and there is a larger version outside a shop nearby which looks like someone has been shooting at it. A bit larger than life wouldn’t you say?

You probably think mermaids have a fish-tail. But look closely at the Little Mermaid statue and you will see she actually has legs and  feet.

DSCF1394So the one I think deserves the award for best mermaid is the one in Uzupis, Vilnius, a not far from the bridge favoured by newly weds (more of that in another post).

The Užupis Mermaid  is one of the symbols of Uzupis created by sculptor Romas Vilčiauskas . She sits in a special niche on the embankment of the Vilnia River.

Some say it’s the mermaid who attracts people from all over the world to Užupis. Those who surrender to her charm remain in Užupis forever.

FYI The same sculptor created the other symbol of Uzupis, the angel – which was put in Uzupis square in 2002 and is a popular setting for wedding photographs.
