Vincas Kudirka, composer of Lithuania’s National Anthem

On 5 July 2009, a statue of Vincas Kudirka (1858-1899) was unveiled in a square off Gedimino pr., at the cathedral end of the avenuein the capital Vilnius. The unveiling coincided with festivities marking the 1000th anniversary of the first time Lithuania was mentioned in official chronicles.

The National Anthem first became official in 1919 until 1940 when Lithuania became part of the Soviet Union and it was reinstated in law in 1992 after Lithuania gained its independence.
