01_NH15HOC_1192961kDAVID HOCKNEY is to pay the tuition fees and living costs of a Lithuanian artist at the Royal College of Art (RCA), where he was a student.

Egle Jauncems, 31, has become the first recipient of Hockney’s scholarship, worth about £40,000, after the British artist chose her from among four students nominated by the RCA.

She recently met Hockney in Los Angeles. “Realising I was in his studio having a conversation about different artistic experiences and practices felt rather surreal,” said Jauncems, who has a BA in Sinology from Vilnius University and is now studying for her MA.

Her work includes the use of acrylics and pastels on canvases that have been hand-woven with rough string and fine organic silk.
