Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla……front page of “The Times” newspaper

Classical music very rarely makes the front page of any newspaper but today The Times here in the UK, features a large photograph of Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla, the newly appointed Music Director of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra.

There has been speculation for months about which candidates were in the running for the job and several fairly well known names (all men) were bandied about as leading contenders.

However, several months ago Norman Lebrecht on his blogsite “Slippedisc” suggested that one of Britain’s leading orchestras was about to appoint a woman as musical director.  In the discussion column someone wrote “it is the worst kept secret in Birmingham that Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla is the preferred choice of the orchestra.”

Everything then went quiet on the subject and some speculated that it would be a massive gamble to appoint not only a woman (shock horror!!!!) but one who had never led  a major orchestra…

Mirga Grazinyte-Tyla…………..Lithuanian conductor destined for great things

mirgaOn Norman Lebrecht’s blog “Slippedisc” there is a debate going on about the relative merits of female orchestral conductors http://slippedisc.com/2015/10/lucernes-summer-of-women-conductors-gimmick-or-breakthrough/, and as usual there is the usual misogyny about how poor female conductors are (please change the record).

All of a sudden there is a left field contribution suggesting that Mirga Grazinyte-Tyla is being seriously considered for the music directors job at the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra to succeed Andris Nelsons.

Of Lithuanian birth, Ms Grazinyte-Tyla has been serving as Assistant Conductor at the Los Angelas Philharmonic as well as continuing to build a reputation in Europe.

I have no idea how substantial these rumours are but another contributor to the discussion say “it is the worst kept secret in Brumm, that she is being seriously considered.”

It would be an enormous leap of faith to appoint such a young and relatively inexperienced conductor however, when one looks back, the orchestra  did…

Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla………..more success for Lietuva

Grazinyte-Tyla_Mirga_72_1 On the 28 July 2014 it was announced that Mirga Grazynte-Tyla, a native of Vilnius, Lithuania had been appointed Assistant Conductor of the Los Angelas Philharmonic.

Ms. Gražinytė-Tyla is the 2012 winner of the prestigious Nestle and Salzburg Festival Young Conductors Award. Subsequently she conducted the Mahler Chamber Orchestra in a symphonic concert at the Salzburger Festspiele.

She was appointed Music Director of the Salzburg Landestheater beginning with the 2015/16 season where in 2014/15 she will conduct new productions of The Magic Flute and Tahrir (world premiere) as Music Director designate. A Dudamel Fellow with the Los Angeles Philharmonic in 2012/13, Ms. Gražinytė-Tyla made her subscription debut stepping in on very short notice for Ludovic Morlot.

Last season, she collaborated with Gidon Kremer and the Kremerata Baltica in an extensive tour, and she made her debut with the Wiener Kammerorchester in Vienna. During 2013/14 as First Kapellmeister of the Opera…

Mirga Grazinyte-Tyla was discovered by the German Conducting Forum – Deutscher Dirigentenforum in April 2009, and has since benefitted from their conducting program and support. With the start of the 2013/2014 season, she begins her tenure as First Kapellmeister of the Opera house in Bern, Switzerland and will conduct their productions of La Traviata and The Cunning Little Vixen.

For two consecutive seasons, 2011/12 and 2012/13, Ms. Grazinyte-Tyla was 2nd Kapellmeister at the Theater Heidelberg which enabled her to conduct many opera productions and symphonic concerts.

In April 2012, Ms. Grazinyte-Tyla won the prestigious Nestle and Salzburg Festival Young Conductors Award selected from 91 applicants by a jury chaired by Maestro Ingo Metzmacher, thus giving her the opportunity to conduct the Mahler Chamber Orchestra in a symphonic concert at the Salzburger Festspiele in Salzburg in August 2012.
